Baghdad, Iraq – May 16, 2025
In a strategic effort to alleviate power grid congestion ahead of Iraq’s high-demand summer months, Minister of Electricity Ziyad Ali Fadhil officially inaugurated the expansion of the West Baghdad (400 kV) Power Station.
According to a statement from the Minister’s media office, the project involved increasing the station’s capacity from 1250 MVA to 1500 MVA by installing a new auto-transformer with a capacity of 250 MVA, following the completion of all necessary civil, mechanical, and electrical works, including operational testing.
The expansion forms part of Iraq’s broader campaign to upgrade its power grid under the “Summer 2025 Load Relief Initiative.” The upgraded station will play a key role in reducing pressure on the grid in western Baghdad and Fallujah (Anbar Province), improving voltage stability and overall network efficiency.
Minister Fadhil praised the technical and engineering teams from the General Company for Electricity Transmission – Central Region for completing the project successfully and emphasized the continued support of the Prime Minister in implementing national strategies to improve energy services and meet the growing demand of Iraqi citizens.
This development is seen as a significant step forward in enhancing the reliability of Iraq’s national grid, particularly during peak summer months, when electricity demand surges across the country.
