The General Commission of Customs in Iraq has confirmed the continued successful and seamless implementation of the TIR international transit system at several border crossings, describing it as a strategic move that is expected to elevate Iraq’s standing in international trade.
Ihab Talib, Director of Transit at the General Commission of Customs, stated that:
"The Commission has officially launched the implementation of the TIR system across all Iraqi border points in coordination with the International Road Transport Union (IRU). This system falls under an agreement signed with the General Company for Land Transport, which serves as the guarantor entity for this project."
He further explained that this step marks the true activation of Iraq’s transit system, leveraging the country’s strategic location between Europe and the Middle East. He emphasized that the implementation is proceeding smoothly and efficiently, in full coordination with all relevant authorities.
Talib added that the TIR system is expected to advance Iraq’s global trade ranking, while simultaneously contributing to the development of the country’s transportation sector and technical and logistical infrastructure. He highlighted that the initiative aligns with the broader Development Road Project spearheaded by the Iraqi government as part of a comprehensive plan to boost regional trade integration.
